Woman Buries Homeless Man In Garden

A woman has buried a hobo in a cement-covered grave in the backyard of her King William’s Town home, the Dispatch online reported on Tuesday.

“With the help of my son, we dug a grave in my back yard. We covered the man’s body with a blanket and buried him. Then we put down cement to cover his grave,” she told the Dispatch.

“I decided to bury him in my yard so that he could rest peacefully,” she said.

The man reportedly arrived and died at her home in June 2006.

It was only when she recently told her brother about the incident that he advised her to inform the police.

Asked why she did not go to the police at the time of his death, she said it had not crossed her mind.

“The only thing that I wanted to do was to give the man a proper burial.

“Instead of phoning the police, I just felt sorry for him. I could see he was helpless and homeless,” she said.

King William’s Town police spokesperson Captain Thozama Solani said an inquest docket had been opened.

“We will soon acquire a court order to allow us to dig up the grave. We will also conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death,” she said.
